Stream: Priests - Radiation / Personal Planes 7"

I recently read a piece titled “Defending Community Spaces” from The Media, a publication featuring former Boston Phoenix (RIP) contributors. It serves as a nice indirect response to what has been going on in Boston. For those who don’t know, the Boston Police have been posing as “punks” in order to shut down shows held in DIY spaces. The article is effective because it addresses the issue as a societal and universal one since it is not from a Boston resident but a touring musician from Washington DC. The musician in question is Katie Alice Greer of Priests (also in Chain and the Gang). She advocates for unmitigated community space and explains her criteria for booking the band’s upcoming tour stating, “It is important to me, and the other 3 members of my band, that we play our music in places where anyone who would like to attend the performance can do so.”

Last year’s Radiation 7” from Priests exuded this kind of simple and to the point intelligence. The group attacks with a youthful frustration and a bare essentials approach reminiscent of 80’s punk bands. Katie’s vocals are shouted not screamed because it is important to understand just what is bothering her. The charismatic singer wields the perfect cadence for a song like “Radiation” that rallies against corporate advertisements and denounces our obsession with the many glowing screens we stare at throughout the day. Drummer Daniele Daniele and guitarist G. L. Jaguar create force while leaving enough space for Katie as she gradually becomes more impassioned (think the Steve Albini School of Music Dynamics). The B-side has a more danceable beat with an angular riff that would fit pleasantly in the Discord Records catalog. The powerful refrain of “Air Force One is a personal plane!” goes straight for the jugular. Appropriately, it is the inaugural release on Discord partner label Sister Polygon and what an introduction it is. Check out their two releases below along with dates for their upcoming tour.
